Over 25 Dead as Powerful Earthquakes Strike Myanmar; Tremors Felt in Bangkok and Vietnam

A powerful earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday, causing widespread panic as tremors were felt as far as Bangkok, Thailand. Hundreds of people evacuated buildings in the Thai capital after the quake, which also impacted parts of Vietnam.

At least 25 people have died after Myanmar was hit by two massive earthquakes—one measuring 7.7 and another 6.4 on the Richter Scale. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the 7.7-magnitude quake struck at around 11:50 AM at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). The epicenter was located approximately 17.2 km from Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, home to 1.5 million people. A powerful aftershock followed soon after.

A second earthquake, measuring 6.4, hit the country at around 12:02 PM, with its epicenter located 18 km south of Sagaing, Reuters reported.
